Lahti-Suunnistus 1.pv (05/08/2017)

Quite nice terrain, good map. Physically not the best day. Technically not good enough.

S-1 The area before small track was really vague, found nothing. Followed compass roughly to the right direction. Found myself right after the track and nailed it.
1-2 Read everything there was, got a bit lucky at the control.
2-3 According to the plan until east of the long green depression before control. Somehow I thought the control was at the end of a different hill so I was to soon realize I'd gotten west of the small depression. +20sec
3-4 Again, heavy on compass. Was going ok and saw a few boulders on my left. Then, the ground was rising a little after the contour and I thought I was near the control. Afterwards I heard I wasn't the only one doing that mistake. Soon I realized there wasn't enough and saw the actual spur on my right. +30sec
4-5 Ran 20m past the flag before noticed it. +15sec
5-6-7 Safe and easy route to 6th bc the first depression looked deep. To 7th started off okay but should have dropped earlier from the ridge to go east of 12. After rocky depression my bearing wasn't quite right and at the yellow depression I thought to be at the smaller one north of the control. Soon I found another control and noticed the slope going too far and steep on my right. Quickly located myself and picked my own flag. Mistake +1min, route +40sec
7-8-9 Short and easy leg before a route choice leg. Planned to approach 9 from below but soon realized it wouldn't make sense route-wise. But the damage was done, instead of getting straight to top I was in this slow and steep slope. Rest of the leg was ok, just not optimal route +30sec
9-10-11-12 Easy control but tough climb. Followed by another easy one bc of formed tracks. Fluent nav to 12th.
12-13 I convinced myself there was no option not to climb, so went straight, aiming off a bit to the left. Located myself easily once atop, easy control. Hard to say how much slower my execution was compared to taking a bit more to the left, as everyone runs faster than me or does more mistakes. Possibly half a minute?
13-14 Lost the track as soon as I found it, but instinct said it would be on my left. No problems after that.
14-15-16-F Avoided green stripes, tried to keep contact. Towards last control straight down the line looking around for vegetation and found one pit as well. Tried to run fast but you know me...

I finished 78th. My leg splits were generally around 90th place. This confirms what I can see from results: I wasn't going very fast compared to the others, but they made way more mistakes.
